The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) runs robust scholarship programmes which date back to the 1950s and have supported thousands of students, most especially from Nigeria.

They offer the most comprehensive scholarship programme in Nigeria, valued at more than $300 million per year, and which is the largest scholarship programme in the country.

The programme offers bursaries to secondary school students to attend one of the best schools in Nigeria.

While initially the programme supported only secondary school students, the Shell Scholarship Programme now covers all tertiary students in Nigeria who satisfy the eligibility criteria. The criteria for bursary award is dependent on a variety of criteria such as academic performance, special abilities, and so on.

How to apply for the Shell Scholarship

To apply for the Shell Scholarship, candidates must fulfil certain criteria. These include a minimum of 30 (but not more than 35) A/AS level credits and in the case of an International Baccalaureate or equivalent (formerly GCE A Level) or equivalent grades and a minimum of two (2) transferable GCSE grade C/D grades at the end of the first year of study at a university/higher education institution.

Participants will be expected to be sponsored by a Shell employee. A full scholarship, however, is not usually granted. However, a limited number of scholarships are available based on students’ outstanding academic results or a statement of need.

What are the requirements of the scholarship?

In the 2018 Shell Scholarship Programmes (General Essay & Essay for All),

● the Essay must be one hundred words or less and can be submitted either by post or online;

● the student must have a minimum entry level entrance exam score of 120 or above on the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE);

● the student must have a grade point average (GPA) of 1.5 on a scale of 1 to 4;

●the student must be willing to provide a recommendation from his or her school principal/staff.

Who is eligible for the scholarship?

Eligible students must meet the following criteria:

Students must be Nigerian citizens or dual citizens, Bursary awardee at the Federal Government of Nigeria Scholarship and National Merit Scholarship Awardees

Students must be on full-time entry to a tertiary institution for the 2016/2017 academic session.
