A brief history of the Ghana Army

During the Gold Coast era, the nation was under the Royal West African Frontier Force. In 1959, two years after Ghana’s independence, the Royal West African Frontier Force was withdrawn to form the Ghanaian Army. The Ghanaian Air Force, Ghanaian Navy, and Ghanaian Army together formed the Ghanaian Armed Forces (GAF). Ghana Army Ranks Structure

Every military body in the world operates under a chain of command. The Ghana Army Rank Structure is divided into two categories.

  • The Officers are the top guns who call the shots. They are more like managers saddled with the responsibility of leading and training of enlisted soldiers. The Officers are the main influencers and planners in the Ghana Army.
  • The Enlisted officers: are military officers who are solely under the authority of an officer.

The Ghana Army Rank Structure is similar to that of her colonial master, the British Army Rank Structure.

The Ghana Army Ranks for Officers

There are officially 10 ranks for officers in the Ghanaian Army. The General is the highest ranking officer in the Ghana Army. While the Second Lieutenant is the lowest ranked officer. The list below is the list of the Ghana Army Officers Rank in descending order:

Ghana Army Salary Structure

The Ghanaian Army is being controlled and regulated by the Ministry of Defense and Central Defense Headquarters as mentioned earlier. These offices are also responsible for the Ghana Army salary Structure.

The Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) was implemented in the year 2010. The implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) increased the salary of the Ghanaian Army. Based on the Ghana Army Salary Structure the salary is based solely on the rank. An Officer will definitely earn more than an Enlisted Officer. The higher the level of rank, the higher the salary.  Also, the higher the level of rank, the higher the responsibility.

Entry Requirement for Ghana Army

For Officers Entry

  • Must be a Ghanaian citizen.
  • Must possess a good character.
  • Must not be less than 20 years and more than 25 years.
  • Must be medically fit by the standards of the Ghana Armed Force.
  • Must not be bonded.
  • Must not be married.
  • Minimum height for males is 1.68m (5ft6inches) and for females is 1.57m (5ft2inches).
  • Must have at least 6 credits in any of WASSCE or BECE which must include a credit in English and a Pass in Mathematics.

For Enlisted Officers

  • Must be a Ghanaian citizen.
  • Must possess a good character.
  • Must not be less than 20 years and more than 30-years old at the time of application`.
  • Must be medically fit by the Ghana Armed Forces
  • Must not be bonded.
  • Marriage (optional).
  • Minimum height for males is 1.68m (5ft6inches) and for females is 1.57m (5ft2inches).
  • Must have at least 6 credits in any of WASSCE or BECE which must include a credit in English and a Pass in Mathematics.
