The History of Appalachian Wireless

In 1928, the General Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio opened a tire plant in Gaffney, South Carolina. In addition to employing hundreds of locals, the company also offered a number of other community services including a library, a hospital, and a movie theater.

In 1950, the company expanded into the communications industry by launching a service called Appalachian Radio. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that Appalachian Wireless was born. It’s been a part of our community ever since.

In 1991, General Tire and Rubber Company brought wireless communications to the South Carolina area by investing in a new wireless company. In 1996, General Tire and Rubber Company changed its name to Gencorp and sold Appalachian Radio to Allied Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1999, Appalachian Wireless became a subsidiary of Gencorp. As a subsidiary of Gencorp, we have been able to offer innovative cellular technologies and improve our operations.

In 2006, we launched our first 4G network in 2010. In 2012, we became a subsidiary of Windstream, an international telecommunications company founded in 1968 with over 500 employees and more than 1 million customers across North America.
